of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football.
The Guyana Football Association is
suspended by FIFA. As long as the suspension is in force, Guyana will be
prohibited from taking part in the preliminary competition for the 2002 FIFA World Cup
Korea / Japan.
The
qualification process for CONCACAF starts with a series of regional preliminaries and a
lot of pot luck.
6 teams in the Central America Zone.
25 teams in the Caribbean Zone; to include
Bahamas, Bermuda and Canada.
Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, and Team USA
get what amounts to a bye -- having qualified for the past 3 World Cups.
The winners of each group qualify for
part 2 of the qualification process -- termed the semi-finals,
while the two runners-up enter the Caribbean Zone's qualification in the 4th Round -- The Interzone:
Runner-up of Central
America A vs. Loser Caribbean 2
Runner-up of Central America B vs. Loser Caribbean 3
These two winners move on as Interzone winners
#2 and #3.
Canada gets half a bye, waiting
patiently for the Loser of Caribbean 1 -- and a chance to become Interzone #1.
Caribbean Zone
Three groups of eight, play a cup knockout to advance.
Final
Qualification -- The winners and runners-up of these three groups then enter
another round robin, home and away, with the top three making it to the 2002 Korea/Japan Finals.
